One of the great things about motorcycle travel is that, unlike typical travel in, say, a car, often times one’s not actually going anywhere in particular. Sure, there may be some idea of a destination, but it really doesn’t make too much of a difference when (and sometimes, if,) one actually arrives there. So, the true rider can experience the journey for what it is, and be present in the place where he (or she) is at. This little philosophical difference leads to the observation of some strange things out on the road. And so it is with my observation in the tiny little town of Bay Port.
It is common for small towns to have their little slogans or claims to fame posted as travelers cross the town limits. If there isn’t anything particularly exciting to proclaim, perhaps it will just be a sign denoting that this little one-light town is the home of the 1993 class D girls’ basketball divisional champions.
However, sometimes there are interesting ones. Like in Bay Port. The sign proudly proclaims, “Welcome to Bay Port, Home of the Fish Sandwich Festival”. That’s right, folks. The famous Fish Sandwich Festival! Now, I’ve heard of lots of festivals. Blueberry, Strawberry, Corn, Walleye, Catfish, Greek, Pickle, and of course, Harvest. But Fish *Sandwich*?!
Apparently, this is a big deal, enough so that it’s a main page on the Bay Port Chamber of Commerce website. Come to think of it, there’s probably not a whole lot of commerce to be chamberin’, so I suppose it makes sense. So, if you happen to find yourself in podunk Michigan Thumb in August, you can stop by for the annual Fish Sandwich Festival, where you can partake in this “original creation” that “takes two hands” to eat. Folks, I can’t make this shit up. Happy aimless travels!
